PROGRAM EXAMPLES

ACCENT has worked with hundreds of U.S. colleges and universities to design one-of-a-kind study abroad programs. These institutions appreciate hearing our ideas on how to enhance their study abroad programs from both academic and logistical points of view. Listed below are a few examples of current programs.

University of Minnesota

Made in Italy - Summer Program with Internship Offerings in Rome

This seven-week summer program in Rome offers four courses: design/marketing, communications, art history, and Italian language, all taught by high-caliber local faculty. The "Made in Italy" theme is enhanced by guest lectures, ranging from Vatican officials to directors of some of Italy's most well-known companies. Visits to museums, design studios, and local and international companies enrich the program, as do outdoor films, operas, and fashion shows. Relevant internships are available to a limited number of students, and all students may participate in excursions to Tuscany, Pompeii, and other regions of Italy. To enhance their cultural immersion, students are housed in private apartments in traditional Roman neighborhoods.

University of California

Semester Programs in Rome, London, Paris, and Florence

These 17-week programs attract between 80 and 150 students from all 10 UC campuses. The students enroll in local language courses as well as core courses in the humanities and social sciences taught by carefully selected host country faculty. Core courses rely significantly on site visits, using the European city as a classroom. Students engage locally through internship and volunteer opportunities; evening lectures with guest speakers such as politicians and community leaders; and cultural activities such as cooking classes, walking tours to sites of special interest and exchanges with local university students. There are also various one-day excursions around the host region. The programs appeals to the widest group of students possible by offering housing in a student residence, private apartments or homestays. The selection varies depending on the host city.

University of Southern California, Viterbi School of Engineering

Summer Program in London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, and Florence

This long-running summer program is offered to between 35-45 juniors and seniors and rotates on a yearly basis between all five ACCENT Centers. USC faculty teach the courses, supplemented by one course taught by host country faculty. ACCENT organizes visits to country-specific engineering projects, such as the largest tide-generated electricity grid and the high-speed rail network in France, Calatrava’s bridge in Venice, the Roman aqueducts, Madrid's Barajas Airport Terminal 4, London’s Tower Bridge, and Brunelleschi’s dome in Florence.

University of Wisconsin

French Semester Program in Paris

University of Wisconsin, Madison offers a spring semester program primarily for French majors and minors. A UW faculty member teaches one course and host country faculty teach two courses. In addition, students take language courses at the Institut Catholique. Students are housed with host families to ensure the maximum amount of immersion.

Michigan State University, Eli Broad College of Business

Undergraduate Program in Paris, Rome, Florence and Madrid

Working together, MSU and ACCENT have created an enriching educational program based in Paris and taught by accompanying MSU faculty. The program includes a variety of guest speakers, a link to a local prestigious business school, and visits to distinguished institutions and top companies in the business world. Each year, additional segments to the program include a two-day excursion to Brussels and a full week in another European city such as Barcelona, Rome, Madrid, or Florence.

Franklin & Marshall College

Semester Program in Paris

Offering a fall semester in Paris, this program is led by Franklin & Marshall faculty who teach two courses. ACCENT sets up onsite visits and guest speakers linked to the coursework. Qualified local French faculty teach language courses and, in order to ensure maximum immersion in the host culture, students are housed and dine with Parisian homestay families.

University of Kansas

British Summer Institute in Humanities in London

30 honors students participate on a month-long summer program in the UK. Students are taught by accompanying KU faculty and teaching assistants, who work closely with ACCENT to provide enrichment activities. This humanities-based program takes place primarily in the field and includes travel through the north of England and ends with a 10-day visit to Edinburgh.
