| The city of Paris is a phenomenon of history and progress. While occasionally adding to its intrigue with modern feats of architecture and culture - such as the Pompidou Center Modern Art Museum (which appears to be built inside out and has a free public library) and the Grande Arche at La Défense (whose breadth could embrace the entirety of Notre Dame Cathédrale) - Paris preserves its noble history and culture in its buildings, monuments, sights, and lifestyle. Half of its buildings are protected under UNESCO. Parisians maintain their cobbled streets that have felt the tread of many wars, uprisings, and celebrations, as well as their buildings that - like any good Parisian - are regularly freshened up. Such is Paris, beautiful and intriguing inside and out. |
| Paris' many districts, called arrondissements, create the feeling of many diverse villages within the city. Each has its own draw or charm, yet each allows a daily life that feels local and personal. You are always within a very short walk of a boulangerie baking fresh baguettes and you can do your daily shopping at the open-air markets offering goods from produce to poisson. It can be difficult to decide whether Parisians are simple or extravagant... or simply extravagant! |
| To study in Paris is treasure that never devalues. When you choose to study Foucault, Simone de Beauvoir, Beckett, or Hemingway, where better than to sit and gaze upon the Seine or under the brilliant shadow of Sacré Coeur and most definitely over an espresso. Great works of art, housed in an array of world-renowned museums, are nearly as close as the people who stand next to you on the métro. Paris is art. To live in Paris at the beginning of the 21st Century is indeed a unique opportunity to learn about and to observe the many social changes happening in France and, more broadly, in Europe.
