ACCENT works in close cooperation with each US academic partner institution in order to tailor a program to reflect the institution’s specific needs. ACCENT ensures that each school retains full identity of its program as well as control over the content.
To accommodate the partner institution’s academic requirements, ACCENT programs range from a full year, semester or summer to shorter 1-2 week seminars and workshops. ACCENT also offers programs during Winterim and Maymester sessions. Both undergraduate and graduate levels of instruction are available, and programs may take place in one or more ACCENT city locations with extended excursions to other European cities.
In general, the majority of ACCENT partners use one of the following program options; however, program possibilities are not limited to these options alone:
I. Faculty-led Programs: Traditionally under this scenario, the sponsoring US school brings its own faculty to teach the program curriculum. ACCENT works closely with all faculty to ensure that they have full administrative support, including assistance with logistical arrangements associated with instruction and scheduling activities related to class excursions and supplemental lectures.
II. Host country Faculty: With this program option, US partners engage highly-qualified faculty from the host country to teach the program curriculum. All host country faculty have appropriate academic credentials, are experienced in teaching American students and are knowledgeable about US higher education. US partner schools have full approval of all host country faculty.
III. Direct Enrollment: In opting for this program model, US partners choose from a variety of distinguished host country schools with instruction available for almost any timeframe, including a full year, a semester or a short-term summer study experience. Academic instruction may be offered in English or the host country language.
IV. Combining Options: US partners often combine two of the above options, either a faculty-led program supplemented by additional host country faculty courses, or a program that blends direct enrollment at a host country institution with additional host country faculty courses. In several cases, ACCENT partners have developed programs incorporating all three of the above options.
University of California Semester Programs in Rome, London and Paris
In 2003, a continuing partnership was created when ACCENT was selected by the University of California’s campus-wide Education Abroad Program as the program provider to assist in creating three new semester programs in Rome, London and Paris. Each of the 17-week programs attracts between 60 and 120 students from all ten UC campuses. The students study in a wide array of disciplines in the humanities, languages and social sciences, all taught by carefully selected host country faculty who have the requisite academic credentials and have been approved by the UC on-site Academic Directors.
University of Kansas British Summer Institute in Humanities in London
The University of Kansas works with ACCENT to offer a month-long summer program for up to 30 honors students in the UK. Students are taught by accompanying KU faculty and teaching assistants who work closely with ACCENT to provide an enhanced educational experience. This humanities-based program takes place primarily in the field and includes travel through the north of England before spending 10 days based in Edinburgh where further classes take place.
University of Wisconsin French Semester Program in Paris
For 20 years, the University of Wisconsin (Milwaukee and Madison campuses) has worked with ACCENT to offer a spring semester program, primarily for French majors and minors. A UW faculty member teaches one course and two other courses are taught by selected host country faculty. In addition, students take language courses at the Institut Catholique, one of several local prestigious institutions with whom ACCENT partners in Paris. Students are housed with host families to ensure the maximum amount of immersion for this semester program.
University of Southern California Engineering Summer Program in London, Paris, Madrid, Rome and Florence
The Viterbi School of Engineering at University of Southern California has developed a summer program that rotates between all five ACCENT Centers. USC’s accompanying faculty teach all courses except one. This course varies each year, depending on the destination city, and is taught by a fully-qualified host country faculty approved by USC. ACCENT organizes special visits to country-specific engineering projects, such as the largest tide-generated electricity grid and the high speed rail network in France, Calatrava’s bridge in Venice, Roman Aqueducts and Brunelleschi’s dome in Florence. This successful program for between 35-45 juniors and seniors is now in its tenth year, and because of demand, will most likely run two parallel programs in coming years.
Michigan State University Undergraduate Business Program in Paris, Rome, Florence and Madrid
Michigan State University’s Eli Broad College of Business is one of a growing number of undergraduate business programs introducing study abroad as an essential part of the undergraduate business degree. Working together, MSU and ACCENT have created an enriching educational program mainly based in Paris and taught by a visiting MSU faculty. The program includes a variety of guest speakers, a link to a local prestigious business school and visits to distinguished institutions and top companies in the business world. Each year, there are two additional segments to the program: a two-day excursion to Brussels and a full week in another European city such as Barcelona, Rome, Madrid or Florence.
Franklin & Marshall College Semester Program in Paris
Franklin & Marshall College is currently developing a fall semester program in Paris, which typifies the individual, tailor-made programs on which ACCENT collaborates with liberal arts colleges. The program will be led by Franklin & Marshall faculty who will teach two courses. ACCENT will assist the faculty member with setting up on-site visits and guest speakers linked to the coursework. Qualified local French faculty will teach the language courses following the curriculum provided by Franklin & Marshall. In order to ensure maximum immersion in the host culture, students will be housed with host families in the city of Paris, where they will also receive four dinners per week.
University of Minnesota “Made in Italy” Summer program with Internship Offerings in Rome
The University of Minnesota sponsors a seven-week summer program in Rome offering four courses: Design/Marketing, Communications, Art History and Italian language, all taught by high-caliber local faculty approved by the University of Minnesota. The "Made in Italy" theme is enhanced by guest lectures, ranging from Vatican officials to directors of some of Italy's most well-known companies. Numerous visits to museums, design studios, and local and international companies enrich the program and provide academic and cultural insight. Internships related to certain aspects of the program are available to a limited number of students. To further this experience, a series of academically-related cultural events are available, including outdoor films, opera performances and fashion shows. Students are also able to participate in excursions to Tuscany, Pompeii and other areas of Italy. To enhance their cultural immersion, students are housed in private apartments in traditional Roman neighborhoods.
